Open Hearts Open Minds Open Doors

We are pleased to announce our new pastor, Victoria Guthrie, will arrive this week.  Victoria is a graduate of LaTrobe University BA, Australia and Eastern Mennonite Seminary, MA in Christian Counseling.  She served as an associate pastor of a large church, and as a senior pastor in small rural churches and several suburban churches.  She was ordained as an Elder in 2001 and has been appointed to serve in seven churches in the Florida Conference since 1995.  She has worked extensively with NA and AA and has served as Spiritual Director of the Southwest Kairos Prison Ministries.  She was a bereavement counselor for hospice and led bereavement groups in churches.  Victoria's style of worship services will include using technology-based worship as well as traditional worship in a more modern setting.

From Pastor Victoria:  Hi, I am Pastor Victoria, you can call me Pastor, Pastor Victoria, or Victoria. Just a little bit about me. I was born in Brooklyn New York at the Brooklyn Methodist Hospital. I happen to know that because I was born at 24 weeks (3 months early).  My father was a Methodist pastor serving in Brooklyn and both my Mother and Father weren't sure I would survive. I was named Victoria Grace (for Victory in the Grace of God). I wore leg braces for 6 years day and night to help me walk and I am grateful that I can move around. If I limp or stagger, don't worry it's just the way I get around from time to time.

We moved frequently for the church or for my parent's job (both were University professors). My family moved to Australia when I was 12 and I came back to the US when I was in my 20's to go to seminary. I was called to the ministry when I was about 13 and went to the Dean of the Seminary in Australia and told him I was ready to enter ministry! It didn't cross my mind that I couldn't even drive at the time. He advised that I finish school and go to university, which I did in Australia.

In my family are my sister and three grown nephews (who all live in Washington State). I have two rescue golden retrievers, Cody (who is 12) was dumped because he was considered too old by his family and Remi (who is 2) was put in a kill shelter because he is blind. They are both very well behaved and love making friends.

I am looking forward to being with you and sharing the love of Christ as we journey together as part of First UMC Lake Alfred.

Blessings, Pastor Victoria
